The Habit
Probably the easiest thing to understand, yet the hardest to execute. There are many things that are happening in the beginning of a meditation practice. You are essentially waking up parts of your brain and building new pathways between others. Establishing new habits can sometimes be a challenge but with this one it’s an important one if you want to see results fast. When building a new practice work in 30-day blocks. After 30 days if you want to take a week off then do so, then start a new block. And yes, that means every day without fail. It’s not just about building the pathways and waking up parts of your brain that previously were a bit sleepy but also a commitment to yourself and how important you think this is for yourself.
Now… I’m not expecting you to meditate for hours and hours every day for 30 days. I would like you in the beginning to stay between 20-60 minutes depending on what you need for the day. Time of day really does not matter in the beginning and more often than not I will ask someone to vary the time of day to experiment with what works best for them. The more you look at your own patterns, the more you will start to see that some meditations work better for you in the morning versus the evening and some will have the opposite effect. Play with the time of day often and make notes in your log along the way.
At the beginning of the section “The Entrance” I will give you a meditation that I would like you to start to use for the next week on top of the breathing exercise. It’s one of my most popular ones because its a great on to start with that not only helps you start a habit, but also gives you a real world tool to bring into your everyday life when dealing with situations.
