Body Position

So… More often than not from movies and T.V. shows you see everyone depicted as meditating in some sort of sitting position. This is simply not necessary nor recommended when you are just starting out. Let’s break down the mechanics of why this is this way so you can understand what is necessary then choose the best position for you.

When someone is meditating the focus on position has always come from the spine being in line and good posture from the base of your spine all the way to your skull. This is one of the main reasons we start people laying down, usually in their beds. Especially nowadays most people don’t have the best posture and trying to maintain that while sitting is forcing them into an unnatural state and can be quite distracting on top of trying to go within their own minds. Therefore, laying down is going to naturally align the spine with the head and they are already in a comfortable spot that they’re familiar with.

It doesn’t matter if it’s on a yoga mat on the floor or in your bed so long as your spine is in alignment use whatever position makes the most sense for you. Especially if you have physical needs that prevent one position over the other.

This also brings up the space you choose to meditate in. This can be equally important as your body’s position. If you choose a space that you are uncomfortable in or are going to be interrupted this will obviously work against you. Plan out your space and position like you’re setting up an important date… Because you are! With yourself.

Start with your bedroom if you don’t have a dedicated space and take the time to let family or house guests know that you do not wish to be interrupted for the time that you’re planning to meditate. It may sound a little awkward but mitigating expectations on the front end can lead to a much more impactful experience. Don’t be afraid to set those boundaries early. This is something you are doing for you, and you are worth the time!!!
